If youcannot get your WindowsXP computer started and have ran out of options you can try a repair install. Arepair install will install Windows over your existing copy and leave all yoursettings, documents and programs intact. If you do not see this option duringthe following the procedure then your Windows installation may be too corruptto repair. If you can get into Windows and you have Internet Explorer 7installed then you need to uninstall it through Add/RemovePrograms first before attempting the repair installation or else InternetExplorer may not work anymore.
Thefirst thing you need to do is configure your computer to boot from the CD-ROMdrive. Click herefor more information on how to do so or refer to your computer's documentationor contact your computer manufacturer. You may also want to check your BIOS for bootoptions. After you set this up, insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restartyour computer.
When the Press any key to boot from CDmessage is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer fromthe Windows XP CD.
PressENTER when you see the message Tosetup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on theWelcome to Setup screen.
Donotchoose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
In theWindows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
Make surethat your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and thenpress R to repair Windows XP.
Follow theinstructions on the screen to complete Setup.
